At its annual Expo, the
Promotional Products Association International
unveiled a move away from the term "distributor."
There was plenty of news at the PPAI Expo 2006 in Las Vegas, ranging from tales of industry growth to new products on offer, but for the Promotional Products Association International itself, the focus was on the corporate gift suppliers or distributors and on the future.
In his last hurrah as chairman of the PPAI board, Danny Sirmon made clear to attendees of the annual trade show's opening session that 2006 would be a year dedicated in large part to actively marketing the association and its members.
"We are going to be aggressively shouting this message to buyers," Sirmon told the crowd at the January 11 opening. "Promotions work; we have the research to prove it, and you need a promotional consultant to buy them effectively".
One of the Irving, Texas-based group's biggest promotional pushes in 2006 will be the term "promotional consultant," which the PPAI believes should replace the venerable term "distributor."
"This is a large, diverse marketplace," says Steve Slagle, president of the PPAI. "Some corporate gift suppliers or distributors sell merchandise, others act more like consultants."
Sirmon, who is also president of Mobile, Alabama-based House of Specialties, adds: "Distributors know what works and what doesn't, they are creative, they educate the end user. That is our value."
In addition to redefining its members' role as promotional consultants, the PPAI announced the launch of a new magazine and an affiliated daily e-mail newsletter. The magazine, Promotional Consultant, which will debut in March, and the newsletter, Promotional Consultant Today, which was set to launch at the end of January, are both aimed at educating distributor salespeople.
While the PPAI works "to drive buyers to distributors, we are also dedicated to training and informing distributor sales people to be promotional consultants so they can best serve their clients," says Tina Berres Filipski, publisher of the two new products and an associate vice president of the PPAI.
