Rosemont-La Petite Patrie

Little Italy

Boulevard Saint-Laurent

The Little Italy, la Petite Italie is where newly arrived Italian immigrants chose to settle when they first set foot in Montreal.

The neighbourhood is roughly surrounded by St-Laurent, St-Denis, St-Zotique and Jean-Talon. Ciao a tutti i visitatori!

All kinds of Montrealers from all kinds of origins go shopping in la Petite Italie on week-ends.

We choose italian roast coffees in Italian coffee shops, we buy bread and pastries in Italian bakeries and we pick the best Italian wine from an Italian food menu in one of the many local Italian restaurants. The area is always animated, especially during the World Soccer Cup where any Italian "caffè" is THE fun place to be, and where you can learn a few Italian words and phrases.

The locality was born at the end of the 19th century and soon became the core of the local Italian community who slowly introduced us to Italian culture traditions. Between 1946 and 1960, thousands of "operais" and "paesanos" arrived in Montreal and many chose to live in the vicinity of the Marché Jean-Talon.

Saint-Laurent Boulevard

The Casa Italia, the centerpoint for the Montreal Italian community since its innaugration in 1936.

Housed in a unique Art Deco building, the Casa Italia is now in need of repair and renovation and a group of young Italians is actively raising funds to make sure this historical site remains.

Some Italian immigrants from Campobasso in Molise helped build the Church of the Madonna della Difesa to commemorate the apparition of the Virgin Mary in La Difesa. Others gave rise to the "Piccola Italia" and, eventually, to the popular Semana Italiana en Montreal.

Since the 1960’s, the Italians of la Petite Italie have started to move to Saint-Léonard in the North-East of Montreal where they changed the social dynamic and enriched the community. Today, the "Piccola Italia" is diversified, some have even started to call it "La Petite Colombie". Nevertheless, it still is our favourite Italian spot.

Thank you for visiting the Little Italy.
More to come soon.
