Montreal Districts

Petite-Patrie District

rue Dante

La Petite-Patrie district extends from east to west between d’Iberville and Park and from north to south, between Jean-Talon and Carrière, along the railways.

Some of the most popular and the most interesting gathering areas in Montreal are located in the district. St-Laurent with its many Italian cafés, the Petite-Italie (MBK), the Dante Street and the ever so busy Marché Jean Talon are all very close.

The name comes from a novel entitled "La Petite Patrie" written by Claude Jasmin. Unlike the rest of the borough, this particular district is 20 years old or so and is composed of small sectors gathered from the surrounding neighborhoods. The district developed its own personality, has its own style and is quite fascinating to discover. Some call it an urban village.

Definition of Population

Église Saint-Jean-de-la-Croix

The district is residential with many commercial activities on many of its commercial roads like Beaubien and St-Hubert. It’s also where the Saint-Jean de la Croix Roman Church built between 1926 and 1927 on St-Laurent corner of St-Zotique has recently been converted into condos.

The population slightly dropped between 1991 and 1996. The residents are of various origins but French is still the language spoken by most. Unfortunately, the area is one of the poor and getting poorer districts of Montreal, especially in its western sector.

Most of the dwellings are occupied by tenants. In the poorest sectors in the south, in the west and in the Petite-Italie (MBK), the residences are badly maintained by owners who live elsewhere. The rents are, however, as high as they are in the east where the households offer better structures.
