Unsettling Tipping

Unsettling tipping, upsetting situations...

The Springhill

The rest of your party might be oblivious but, inside you, unsettling tipping is making you feel highly stressed.

Tipping for services is not always easy. Tips are not required, but we are highly frowned upon if we don't tip or tip poorly. Tips are expected by many people in the service industry.

The challenge is not in everyday situations. While most people feel confident when tipping in a restaurant, many feel far less secure when it comes to offering a tip in other situations. Presenting a tip can also be awkward. Fortunately, technology has made it a little easer with a tip option on the credit or debit card bill.

Tipping Pre-Tax or Post-Tax

You are expected to tip 15% of the pre-tax bill. Tips may be calculated pre-tax, but many people just use the total bill.

Normally the taxes appear on the receipt after the subtotal, usually on two separate lines.

In Quebec, Revenu Quebec administers the GST, the federal Goods and Services Tax in English or the TPS, the Taxe sur les produits et services in French. The GST/TPS is calculated on the selling price at the rate of 5%.

The QST, the Quebec Sales Tax in English, the TVQ, the Taxe de vente du Québec in French is calculated on the selling price to which the GST/TPS (5%) has been added. The QST/TVQ rate in 2012 is 9.5%.

A good rule of thumb is to take the two taxes and to add them. As of January 1, 2012, it comes out to roughly 15% (14.98%) of the bill before taxes. Tip a round amount for good service. For great service, you may add another 5% to 10%.

Check, please!

You may have noticed a barcode at the bottom of our restaurant bills. As of November 1, 2011, the barcode is mandatory. This barcode is proof that your bill was produced using a sales recording module selected by Revenu Québec.

The law requires all restaurateurs to provide a standardized bill. Make sure you get one and take it with you. Doing so will help ensure that all our taxes go to funding our public services.
