Ahuntsic-Cartierville Electoral Geography

The Ahuntsic-Cartierville electoral geography is divided into four electoral maps and profiles based on the areas, the borough borders, the demographic trends, the parishes and the range of the borough. 

A socio-economic homogeneity and an electoral map that is revised every 4 years, one year prior to each November general election that also takes place every 4 years.

Electoral Map

The borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville ranks number 15 out of the 19 boroughs of the City of Montreal in terms of total area, number 5 in terms of population size and number 9 in terms of population density.

The borough shares its borders with the Rivière-des-Prairies as well as with the Montréal-Nord, Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension and Saint-Laurent boroughs. 

In 2016, 143,853 residents lived in the borough with a variation of only 1% between 2011 and 2016. The density of the population was 8,682 residents per square kilometres and the unemployed rate was 11%.


Electoral Democracy

According to the Elector's Manual provided by Élections Montréal, during the last  municipal election that took place in November 2017, the residents of Ahuntsic-Cartierville voted for the following 5 electoral offices.

  • The mayor of the City of Montreal
  • The mayor of the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville
  • Four borough councillors

One borough councillor for each of the four electoral districts of the borough based on their respective social and economic factors. 

Electoral Votes

The borough council of Ahuntsic-Cartierville is thus composed of five electoral officials.

  • One borough mayor who is also a city councillor,
  • Four borough councillors, one for each of the four electoral districts. 

A borough mayor elected by the residents of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, a borough council composed of borough councillors who sit on their borough council only and no city councillors who, unlike borough councillors, sit on their borough council and on the city council.

Electoral Geography and Services

The services offered to the residents of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough and, for that matter, to all the other borough residents of the City of Montreal are divided into four sections as per the Montréal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities of the City of Montreal.

The first section is related to Permits, Regulations and Authorisations accompanied by three other sections all related to the different categories of services provided by the elected Borough Council of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. 

Services under the jurisdiction of the Borough Council of Ahuntsic-Cartierville :

  • The Activities and Leisure section composed of Arts and Culture, Sports and Leisure and Community Life.
  • The Services to Citizens section composed of Traffic, Transport and Infrastructure, Permits and Regulations, Environment and Health and Public Safety.
  • The Business and Savings section is composed of Economic Development, the Permits and  Regulations and Town Planning.

In spite of the general quality of the environment in Ahuntsic-Cartierville, local elected officials have a few problems to mend and solutions to find. 

Among other matters, the quality of the habitat in certain areas needs to be improved, traffic on main roads in industrial sectors needs to be better controlled, air traffic over the territory is a source of disturbance and some of the commercial streets and areas need to be revitalised
