In 2010, the estimated number of employment opportunities jobs in the 19 boroughs of Montreal was 999,483 but, in 2006, the boroughs provided a total of 985,455 employment jobs. The aging index is below break even in Montreal but, compared to the suburbs, the labor market replacement index of the City of Montreal indicates a better influx of new workers.
Goods-producing industries are divided into five sectors and services-producing industries are divided into fifteen sectors. Manufacturing (NAICS Code 31-33) is first with a local job listing of 122,745 employment jobs, and Healthcare and Social Assistance (NAICS Code 62) is second with a local job listing of 120,065 employment jobs.
Many information regarding the boroughs of Montreal employment such as types of employment and lists of employment companies and locations are supplied by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Emploi Québec - Information sur le marché du travail (IMT) is also an excellent source of information regarding employment ideas and so are the various Profils sectoriels provided by the City of Montreal.
Most employment opportunities jobs are located in the boroughs of Ville-Marie and Saint-Laurent. Both boroughs account for nearly 420,000 career jobs and offer the highest number of employment companies. More than one third of all the employment opportunities jobs offered within the City of Montreal are located in these two boroughs.
The borough of Ville-Marie does however offer a tighter cluster of employment jobs then the borough of Saint-Laurent. At the other end of the spectrum the boroughs of Pierrefonds-Roxboro, Outremont and l'Ile-Bizard-Sainte-Genevieve offer, all three together, less than 10,000 career jobs.
Manufacturing (NAICS Code 31-33), Healthcare and Social Assistance (NAICS Code 62), Retail Trade (NAICS Code 44-45) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (NAICS Code 54) account for almost half of all the employment jobs in Ville de Montreal. In comparison, Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting (NAICS Code 11) as well as Mining, Quarrying and Oil and Gas Extraction (NAICS Code 21) account for a small part of Montreal employment opportunities jobs.
Information and Cultural Industries (NAICS Code 51) as well as Finance and Insurance (NAICS Code 52) are closely associated with Ville de Montreal, while other industries such as Construction (NAICS Code 23) and Retail Trade (NAICS Code 44-45) are, proportionally, associated with the outer City of Montreal.
Clothing Manufacturing (NAICS Code 315) is the largest industry in the City of Montreal. Other important industries are Transportation Equipment Manufacturing (NAICS Code 336) and Food Manufacturing (NAICS Code 311). In contrast, employment companies in Wood Products Manufacturing )NAICS Code 321) and in Non-metallic Mineral Product Manufacturing (NAICS Code 327) are seldom found in Ville de Montreal.
