Montreal Less Sleazy Areas
It is important to stick to the main city safety tips. Like all big cities, Montreal has areas that are less savory than others and visitors are wise to stay away from these areas at night.
At night time, you should avoid walking alone in what is still the red light district in the Quartier Latin near St-Laurent and Ste-Catherine.
Our red light district is slowly being transformed into the Quartier des spectacles, but it's not done yet.
Drug use and dealing has increased dramatically in the Shaughnessy Village around Ste-Catherine between Atwater and Guy, and it's a huge problem. It's not a very dangerous area but if you can avoid it, do so, especially the Cabot Square. Also avoid the city's parks (type "liste des parcs" in the "Recherche" box).
Downtown Montreal East of St-Laurent, becomes fairly seedy and dangerous, especially near the Gay Village Montreal and Papineau. There's plenty of drug use and prostitution. Try to avoid Parc-Extension and lower Cote-des-Neiges, especially around Victoria as they are not unfamiliar to gang violence. Nonetheless, Montreal is a great city. Just use common sense and you'll be fine.
Montreal City Safety Tips
For example your could:
Know your way around and learn about Montreal. Visit the parks, restaurants, retail stores, sporting facilities of your neighbourhood.
Be confident in your walking and driving. Move with confidence and with a sense of purpose.
Carry your cash separately so, if worst comes to worst, you could throw the cash in one direction and head the other way without losing your credit and ID cards.
If you carry a bag avoid those that can only be carried by hand, as they are easier for people to grab.
Don’t anger people. You shouldn't avoid interactions with others, but don't be rude even if others are rude to you.
Program your cell phone with appropriate phone numbers like the 9-1-1 Emergency Centre, the 4-1-1 Directory Assistance 1-800-FREE-411 or 1-800-373-3411 and the STM-INFO - option 7 or 514 786-4636 + 7.
