First Motel in the World
The word motel is derived from the word motorist and the word hotel.
In 1925, people had fallen in love with the automobile. Motels then called motor courts came into being to meet the needs of an increasing number of travelers.
In those days, the motels were small shacks equipped with the basic requirements and with communal showers and toilets. They were usually located in the back of a gas station or a general store.
By the 1940s motels were everywhere in the United States and catching on in Canada. That first motel is the Motel Inn off Highway 101 in a small coastal town north of Los Angeles in California. It is looking a bit gloomy nowadays, but the owner plans to reopen it as a museum dedicated to the history of the motel industry.
