Stranger Smart

A neighbourhood is, in a way, the extension of a family. Consequently, a stranger smart awareness and attitude can easily be shared with other members of a community. If we are involved with our environment, if we have a positive attitude and if we work together, we all contribute to the enhancement of our quality of life.

  • Get to know your neighbourhood and your local streets. Visit the various stores and facilities and find out about their opening hours.
  • Visit the city's parks - liste des parcs - but trust your instincts and choose wide open, well-lit or busy paths.
  • Be confident in your walking. Move with confidence and with a sense of purpose. If you think you are being followed, cross the street and check.
  • Don’t anger people. You shouldn't avoid interactions with others, but don't be rude even if others are rude to you.
  • At night, walk down well-lit, busy streets and feel safer. When you are walking and a driver stops to ask you for information, keep a safe distance between yourself and the car.
  • Petty crime, such as pick pocketing, purse snatching and car theft, does occur. Don't let your valuables in an unattended vehicle.
  • Make sure you don't carry large sums of money or valuables in your handbag. Carry your cash separately so, if worst comes to worst, you could throw the cash in one direction and head the other way without losing your credit and ID cards.
  • If someone tries to grab your bag and you resist, you may get hurt. It's better to let the thief take it. Your physical well-being is more important than you bag.

  • Be stranger safety wise and go to the STM Montreal security Web page where you’ll find the information you need to ensure that all your trips by bus or by metro are secure. Then, you may dial STM-INFO (514 786-4636 + 7) to find out when is the next bus from wherever you are.
