Montreal NAICS codes is a classification system based on statistical units described as units of observation or of measurement for which data is collected. The four major statistical units are enterprises, establishments, companies and locations.
The enterprise is top of the hierarchy and is associated with a complete set of financial statements and the establishment is the level at which the accounting data required to measure production is available.
The company is the level at which operating profit is measured and the location is at the bottom of the hierarchy and only requires the number of employees.
The Canadian economy is divided into sectors and industries. Five sectors in the goods-producing industries and fifteen sectors in the services-producing industries. More precisely, NAICS Canada 2012 is divided into 20 sectors, 102 subsectors, 323 industry groups and 711 industries and replaces NAICS Canada 2007.
Industrial statistics are found under the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) Canada 2012 and production functions are found under the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) Canada 2012, the recommended standard for those who wish to evaluate product classification instead of industry classification.
In 1997, the statistical agencies of United States, Mexico and Canada jointly created the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The NAICS replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) used since the 1930s.
The three countries agreed to revisit the structure of the NAICS codes every five years. A revision has been produced in 2012 and the next one will be produced in 2017.
Both the industrial statistics of the Montreal NAICS codes as well as the goods and services statistics of the Montreal NAPCS codes can be compared and analyzed.
The structure of Industry Canada NAICS is hierarchical and is shaped into four levels. Sectors 2-digit codes, subsectors 3-digit codes, industry groups 4-digit codes and industries 5-digit codes.
The NAPCS is also hierarchical and is also shaped into four levels. Groups 2 digit codes, classes 5 digit codes, subclasses 6 digit codes and details 7 digit codes.
NAPCS and NAICS code listing make it easier to conduct research on industries, analyse goods and services, compare companies to their competitors and identify and analyze segments of the industry such as establishments, salaries or international trade.
NAICS codes search also provides comparable statistics among the three North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) trading partners.
An agreement between United States, Canada and Mexico that entered into force in 1994 and that created the largest free trade region in the world.
The NAFTA helps Canadian, American and Mexican companies sell products and services to each other and manufacture products and services together.
Goods-producing industries primarily associated with the production of goods are divided into five sectors and are classified under the primary (production of raw materials) and secondary (transformation of raw and intermediate materials) economic activities. Services-producing industries are divided into fifteen sectors and are classified under the tertiary economic activities.
