Duties of a Financial Planner

The duties of a financial planner is to analyse his or her client's current situation by gathering pertinent personal and financial data like assets, liabilities, existing insurance, investment statements, etc.

They must help clients set personal financial goals, desired degree of financial independence, retirement objectives, childrens' education, etc.

They must identify the obstacles to achieving these goals, taxes, cash flow problems, not having a savings strategy, etc.

They must make recommendations and propose alternative solutions. A good financial plan is based on a customized analysis.

They must coordinate the implementation of the recommendations and review the plan on a regular basis by meeting with their clients at least once a year.

Personal financial planning is a process of optimizing people's financial situation and assets, whether it is done by Canadian CFPs (F&E;) or Quebec F.Pls. (F&E;)

Financial planning deals with the areas of finances, taxation, legal aspects, estate planning, insurance, investment and retirement planning.

A financial plan provides clear solutions with many examples and demonstrations as well as a detailed, realistic and step-by-step action plan.

Your planner will propose a personalized strategy that will allow you to reach your financial goals for retirement.

Once you have chosen a plan, you can and should be able to count on your financial planner as an ally in the planning of your retirement.

A good planner should provide you with an overview of your financial situation and should not press you to buy a particular product.

Planners should listen to you and let you make your decisions without imposing their points of view. They should inform you without bombarding you with useless information. If you have any doubts, do ask for clarification.

Financial planners are legally obligated to inform their customers about their methods of remuneration. They may receive professional fees, commissions from the financial products they sell, or both.
