How I Did This!
I Stand on the Shoulders of Giants!
In the early 1990s I discovered the Internet. The first website I ever visited was the Musée du Louvre. The site was not as beautiful and as interesting as it is now, and it took forever to download, but I was overwhelmed. I could travel the world from a computer! Wow!
I decided right there and then that that’s what I wanted to do when I retire. Call it intuition, call it premonition, I don’t know, but thanks to Site Build It! here I am now.
Years passed by. I worked in international trade. I helped Montreal SMEs build international marketing plans. I also guided them through the financial programs offered by both our governments to help them export their products and services to various countries.
I became interested in cultural differences. In international marketing, it’s the differences in buyer behaviour that cause problems, not the similarities. Have you heard about the Canadian company that exported its beverages in jugs that were too big for the French coolers? Can you imagine this poor French grocer trying to find a proper refrigerated location to put all those f… jugs his boss ordered from Canada? It’s funny, but unproductive and expensive.
I realized however that, except for having travelled a bit, I didn’t know much about New York, Boston, Paris, Barcelona or Ottawa even. How could I tell anyone about cultural differences without having been born, without having lived in any of those cities?
On the other hand, I could help people get acquainted with Montreal. I was born in Montreal - Hôpital Notre Dame on Sherbrooke East. I spent my childhood in Villeray and then in Ahuntsic. I studied at the Cégep du Vieux-Montreal, and then at HEC Montréal and McGill University.
I worked downtown and in the Vieux Montréal most of my life. I’ve had customers in just about every Montreal borough or district. I eventually settled in Mercier but would now like to buy a loft somewhere along the River.
I decided it was time for me “to travel the world from my computer”. I chose to introduce Montreal to virtual and actual visitors. In international trade it’s called “l’accueil”. I was going to become some kind of a Reception Committee. I was going to tell the net about Montreal and introduce Montrealers to net users. I had a plan.
This is how Montreal Business Kit started to take form. I didn’t do it right at first. I started with pages on Hotels, Restaurants, Real estate, but it didn’t feel right.
It took me awhile to realize what it was, and then, suddenly, I knew what I was going to do. I was going to build a city and then have people settle in, not the other way around. I erased all my pages and started all over again.
I didn’t use the C T P M process to its full potential when I described Montreal, but I planned on using it later, when I was going to introduce Montrealers to net surfers. I now generate sufficient traffic and can go on with the part where I talk to lots and lots of interesting Montrealers and where I tell the net about them.
This is not a Get Rich Quick story, but it sure is fascinating. I’m meeting all kinds of wonderful people and making new friends along the way.
If you’re like me, you’re probably interested in doing what it takes. You're not afraid to do the work necessary to build a REAL business that will generate long-term profits. Everyone wants to believe that GRQ is possible, but it’s not.
SBIers succeed...
- We "build it" without hiring designers, Webmasters, SEO experts, marketers.
- We build it without wasting our time on any activity that is unrelated to our business.
- We know that Ken Evoy cares fiercely about our success, that he fixes problems instead of hiding them, and that this sentiment runs all the way from the top down.
The bottom line is that SBI! has empowered me to have a website that I designed, and can update and edit myself easily.
Not to mention having all the amazing tracking tools that lets me see how my site is doing - and which keep pushing me to do more.
And those behind the scenes features, submitting to SE engines, SE ratings, traffic and link tracking, how to create income with Adsense, those are the things I was completely unaware of before SBI!.
If you think Site Build It! is for you, go ahead, click and enter a special comfy world, the SBI! world.
