Plateau Mont-Royal DistrictMile EndThe L'Avenue du Mont Royal was once called Mile End which, in those days, meant one mile away from the limits of the city of Montreal. Located between Outremont and Rosemont La Petite Patrie, the territory now lies within des Carrières to the North, Hutchison to the West, Mont Royal to the South and Christophe Colomb and Brébeuf to the East. The impressive Église Saint-Michel Archange built in 1914-15, and the splendid façade of the Rialto Theatre built in 1924 are two beautiful examples of the architecture movements that prevailed during the beginning of the 20th century. At first it was the Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who settled in the area. One of their descendants, the writer Mordicai Richler, grew up on St-Urbain in the 1930s and 1940s, and wrote about the neighbourhood in several of his novels. Then the population became diversified. France, Portugal and Greece are the first three countries of origin of the immigrants now living in the vicinity. The well known French multinational Ubisoft, a developer, publisher and distributor of video games, is located in an old textile factory corner of St-Laurent and St-Viateur.
Many artists and young professionals live in the environ. Very connected, the streets are lined with art galeries, designer shops, fancy boutiques and charming cafés. Fortunately, the small Jewish and Portuguese grocers, the Greek restaurants and the famous bagels Montreal style on Fairmont and St-Viateur are still around. Thank you for visiting Mile End.
