Hotel tipping, restaurant tipping, valet tipping, don't do it, don't say “I'm always unsure, so I don't tip when I probably should”. You have no reasons to because the rules for tipping are quite simple. I'll grant you this though, it's not how much to tip that is difficult to grab it's who to tip.
In hotels you tip the porter, the housekeeper, the concierge and the valet. You also tip the waiter, the barman, the taxi driver, the hairdresser, the hair stylist, the barber, the spa and the tour guide and driver.
Why? As of May 1, 2014, the Quebec Act Respecting Labour Standards stipulates that the minimum hour rate for employees receiving tips is 8,90$ and that the minimum hour rate for employees who don't receive tips is 10,35$.
Proper tipping is 10% for bad but not atrocious service but you should talk to the manager about poor service instead, 15% for good service and 20% for great service. The tip can be before or after taxes, but when you tip after taxes you are showing an extra appreciation.
People in the service industry work under the assumption that a tip is forthcoming. Bad tippers usually say they don't tip when the service is bad but, somehow, they seem to encounter bad service everywhere they go. Local tipping is not mandatory, but the best tipping is voluntary, expected and appreciated.
If you developed a special relationship with members of the hotel staff, personalized tipping for any kind of service, business or otherwise is always a nice gesture.
You can tip after the service has been rendered or at the end of your stay. Usual tipping hotel standards are based on our tipping culture, not on our requirements.
Hotel tipping is a thank you note, usually in the form of money, we hand with ease and self-confidence. Proper tipping is one way of showing our appreciation for a first class service.
When we tip we are merely trying to say thank you to a hotel staff that did the best they could. If you enjoyed your stay, it is only polite to acknowledge those who participated in making your stay as pleasant, as comfortable and as memorable as possible.
There are lots of guests in a hotel and there are things that you can do to distinguish yourself. Advance hotel tipping works quite nicely on many occasions, it gives the hotel staff an added interest and attention.
It helps make sure that you and the members of your group will be well taken care of with better rooms, pleasant amenities and great service.
Various extras during your stay always come back to you by ways of smiles and special attentions by the attendant staff.
Comment cards are another way of expressing your satisfaction. Letting management know their employees are appreciated is always a nice gesture. It allows the feelings of high-quality achievements tumble down to all the members of the hotel staff.
For a special acknowledgment, a letter to the hotel manager can go a long way. And by sending a copy to the person you are praising, you are making sure s/he is aware of your satisfaction and appreciation for a job well done. S/he will also remember your name on your next hotel stay.
