Driving at Night

Driving at Night - Milton Street

Of course, driving at night in the streets of Montreal is different from driving during day time. Day driving carries its own challenges, but night driving tires more.

The driver has to be more attentive, more focused, and it's even more challenging for people who are visually impaired, even slightly.

When we are behind the wheels, we are, of course, responsible for our behavior, our safety and the safety of others. This is the main reason why certain precautions must be taken.

Driving at Night - Bike Lane

Of course, you already know about driving at night and night driving tips, but we feel responsible. Our only wish is to help reduce the risks of car accidents during night time.

Observe night driving safety as soon as the sun goes down. Twilight is one of the most difficult times to drive because our eyes are constantly changing to adapt to the growing darkness.

Then again, it is sometimes easier to drive at night if we are careful and alert. There are less hazards to worry about, less pedestrians, animals or bicycles and, depending on the time, no children.

Make Sure Your Car Is In Good Condition

Driving at Night - René-Lévesque Boulevard

  • Check if your lights and your brakes are working properly.
  • Interior lights should not be kept on while driving, as they have an impact on outside visibility.
  • Keep your windshields spotless, inside and out, and make sure your head and tail lights are clean.
  • Keep your car properly ventilated because driving during night hours is a more tiring exercise.
  • Your rear view mirrors should be changed to night setting so headlights from behind are not directed into your eyes.
  • If your car breaks down, park it off the road and turn on the parking and hazard lights to alert other drivers.

Stay On The Safe Side

Driving at Night

  • Avoid honking for passing cars at night, use flashing lights instead.

  • Avoid flashing your lights at incoming traffic.

  • Cars on high beam should not be countered with high beam from your own car.
  • Turn your headlights on, being seen is as important as seeing, and make sure they are properly aimed.
  • Driving at Night

  • Headlamps should be maintained at low beam when following another vehicle.
  • Reduce your speed and increase your following distance.

  • Drinking and driving is to be strictly avoided, and smoking should be refrained.
  • Use the sun visor when the street lamps are too bright.

Remain Careful and Alert

  • If you are driving late at night all alone in your car, you are likely to feel sleepy. Play your favorite song or listen to an irritating one if it keeps you awake. Try any of these, but make sure you stay awake.
  • Then again, if you are too tired to drive, stop for a light snack and a few exercises, or decide to get some rest in one of our motels.
