Mercier-Est is part of the Mercier district and, believe it or not, is located towards the East part of the borough. The territory is surrounded by the St-Lawrence River to the South, the Autoroute 25 to the West, the Georges V Avenue to the East and the Anjou borough and district to the North.
The neighborhood is mostly residential and the construction of new dwellings - residential and commercial - is still a significant part of its development. Three major commercial roads cross the area, Notre-Dame, Hochelaga and Sherbrooke. The residents have access to one metro station only, Honoré-Beaugrand.
The residents have access to many small commercial areas such as Sherbrooke, Beaubien and as well as a few shopping centres such as the Centre Domaine on Granby corner of Sherbrooke and the Place Versailles further East on Sherbrooke.
The neighborhood is equipped with vast and pleasant green areas and with large parks such as the Promenade Bellerive. The Promenade is a park, a bicycle path and the largest window on the River on the island.
Notre-Dame was once THE street where to live and the Pierre-Bernard house illustrates this reality. Bungalows with naval designs still decorate the landscape and a it's always and interesting and a fun game to look for them and to discover them during a walk or a ride.
A large portion of the population (88%) is French-speaking, the residents are mostly middle-class and many own their residence. A strong sense of belonging is frequently observed when talking to the residents. The area hides a certain poverty created by the nearby industries, highways and refineries. Certain streets show apartment buildings in poor conditions and more favored avenues offer nice houses with large courtyards.
Thank you for visiting Mercier Est. More to come soon.
