Mercier-Ouest
The area is bordered by the St-Lawrence River to the South, the East part of the district, the Anjou and St-Léonard boroughs and districts to the North and the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Rosemont districts to the West. The neighborhood is mostly French-speaking with an increasingly important contributions from cultural communities such as the Italians who settled in the neighborhood some 65 years ago. The socio-economic cartography of the territory clearly shows significant islands of poverty in parishes such as Louis-Riel on Carignan North, Guybourg on Cadillac North and Notre-Dame-des-Victoires on Lacordaire South. Then again, favourable socio-economic pointers indicate that the area is now becoming a middle-class neighborhood with important differences between high and low incomes.
During the last decade, the closing of the Canadian Vickers, Steinberg and the Angus Shops resulted in massive job loss. On the bright side, the development of the L'Assomption and L.-H. Lafontaine industrial parks confirms the industrial vocation of the district and brings many new local jobs. The warehouses of Métro-Richelieu, Johnson & Johnson and Catelli located in the area also create employment. Another important employer is the Louis-H. Lafontaine Hospital, one of the largest psychiatric institution in Montreal. Finally, the commercial activity on its three main streets, that is Sherbrooke, Hochelaga and Notre-Dame, is far from being minor.
