La Petite-Patrie

rue Dante

La Petite-Patrie extends from east to west between d’Iberville and Park and from north to south, between Jean-Talon and Carrière, along the railways.

Some of the most popular and the most interesting gathering areas in Montreal are located in the district. Saint-Laurent with its many Italian caffès, la Petite-Italie, the Dante Street and the ever so busy Marché Jean-Talon are all very close.

The name comes from a novel entitled "La Petite Patrie" written by Claude Jasmin. Unlike the rest of the borough, this particular district is 20 years old or so and is composed of small sectors gathered from the surrounding neighborhoods. The district developed its own personality, has its own style and is quite fascinating to discover. Some call it an urban village.

Definition of Population

Église Saint-Jean-de-la-Croix

The district is residential with many commercial activities on many of its commercial roads like Beaubien and Saint-Hubert. It’s also where the Saint-Jean-de-la-Croix Roman Church built between 1926 and 1927 on Saint-Laurent corner of Saint-Zotique has recently been converted into condos.

The population slightly dropped between 1991 and 1996. The residents are of various origins but French is still the language spoken by most. Unfortunately, the area is one of the poor and getting poorer districts of Montreal, especially in its western sector.

Most of the dwellings are occupied by tenants. In the poorest areas, in the south, in the west and in the Montreal Small Italy, the residences are badly maintained by owners who live elsewhere. The rents are as high as they are in the east part of the district where the households offer better structures.

Images Montréal

Images Montreal is a huge project that aims to be the biggest exclusive website of Montreal's skyscrapers, historical buildings and architecture landmarks.

Old historical monuments have a lot of interest as much as new apartment buildings, new skyscrapers or graffitis.

Montreal by Metro

Montreal by Metro is an unofficial website for fans of Montreal's metro system.

Our modern rapid transit system is one of the most architecturally distinctive subway systems in the world.

Unlike many other subway networks, every station in Montreal is distinct.

The system is beautifully decorated with hundreds of pieces of public art, including sculptures, frescoes, and stained glass.

STM Montréal

STM Montreal is composed of 68 metro stations spread along four lines and of a network made of 170 daytime and 20 night time bus service routes.

The metro provides 1.3 million trips every day. STM Montreal web site also offers a section called Art in the Métro.
