Ville Marie District

Fur District

Édifice Mayor

The fur district still resists to the invaders. A small area kind of hidden in a corner of Ville-Marie, on Mayor and St-Alexandre. In spite of the many jolts experienced by the Montreal clothing industry, the fur industry is still alive and well, even if some furriers moved to the Cité de la mode on Chabanel to join other clothing companies.

The history of the Montreal fur industry is closely related to immigration. At the beginning of the 20th century, a group of Jewish immigrants specialized in the fur business settled in Montreal. During the 1930’s, several master-furriers came from Leipzig, Germany and joined them. After the Second World War, it was the turn of the Greeks to get involved in the manufacturing and the selling of fur coats and other items.

Many people working in the fur business came from Kastoria, Greece. When the Greek manufacturers couldn’t find skilled workers in Montreal, they went to Kastoria to recruit. The Jews and the Greeks shared the market until the Jews withdrew in the 1980’s. The fact that the industry is primarily made of Québécois of Greek origin facilitates its cohesion. Today, the window displays in the Fur District attract the tourists as well as the workers.

Jobs in my Area

St-Alexandre Street

In spite of a crisis in the Montreal apparel industry, the fur sector in the province of Quebec has remained very dynamic.

Concentrated in Montreal, in a centrally located and well-defined area known as the 'fur district', it reorganised and was able to retain its market share, particularly its share of the international market, while remaining Montreal-based and without relocating to another district.

How does one explain the uniqueness of Montreal's fur industry – an industry whose innovative character is acknowledged by all the apparel stakeholders? The hypothesis is that the success of Montreal's fur industry stems from the introduction of a flexible yet aggressive form of governance with sector-specific, social and territorial characteristics.

From The uniqueness of the Montreal fur industry in an apparel sector adrift: the role of proximity by Juan-Luis Klein, Diane-Gabrielle Tremblay, Jean-Marc Fontan and Nathalie Guay (2007).
