The story of the Montreal Underground City is linked to the construction of the Place Ville Marie also called "la grande dame de Montréal" in 1962 and to the opening of the STM Montreal Metro in 1966.
Tunnels were drilled, buildings were connected and the Montreal Underground as we know it today started to emerge.
Today, the Montreal Underground(PDF) is a focal part of Ville Marie. It mostly is a series of metro stations, commercial centres, shops, hotels and office towers that form a convenient place to go.
The area is cool in the summer, warm in the winter, nice for a walk, practical for shopping, convenient for a quick lunch or a not so quick dinner and pleasant to visit if you like to mingle.
Some people think that Montrealers prefer to stay underground during the winter, but it’s a myth. Most of us enjoy winter and most of us practice more than one winter sport. The snow, the rain or the wind seldom stop us from going out and from going to work. Montreal Underground is mostly used as a short cut and nearly 500,000 people walk through it each day.
Thank you for visiting Montreal Underground. More to come soon.
